E36 M3, E46 M3 and Z3M/Z4M all have an oil cooler and oil thermostat. It closes oil flow to
the cooler until the engine is warm. After the engine has warmed
thermostat opens but even then only a part of oil flow is directed
through oil cooler which makes these cars run pretty high oil temperatures on track.
This
oil diverter valve does not restrict oil flow through the cooler like thermostat does making oil
temps on track lower by 15-25 deg C with the same oil cooler.
